  • TAXI!
  • $3- Every mile up to 6 miles $5.25 for every mile after
  • TAXI
  • On the side of the taxi it said that it costs $3 per mile and after 6 miles it costs $5.25 for every mile after.
  • I bet you we could make that into an algebraic equation!
  • Using this and the information on the side of the taxi we can determine an equation by plugging in the variables. The equation to figure out miles would be y=3x+2.25(x-6).
  • To figure out the equation we will use the y=mx+b form. In this case y is the total cost, m is the slope or rate of change, x is the distance traveled, and b is the y-intercept.
  • I wouldn't be able to travel that far because I only have $20. To figure out the distance I can travel you would plug in 20 to y, 20=3x+2.25(x-6), which will equal six miles.
  • Now say I want to travel from my house to giant, which is ten miles. Here we would plug in 10 for x, y=3(10)+2.25(10-6). The total cost would be $39.
  • Now if you want to get even fancier you can figure out the cost-intercept using our equation from before. y=3x+2.25(x-6). We would distribute the 2.25 into x and 6 getting y=3x+2.25x-13.50. Finally we would add the like terms to end with y=5.25x-13.50.
  • Because the cost-intercept is the same as the y-intercept using our prior knowledge of y=mx+b and that b is the y-intercept, we know that -13.50 is the cost-intercept. This is saying that for not riding in a taxi we earn $13.50, which would be very nice, is unrealistic.
  • Using this we could also figure out the slope(m) which is 2.5, and represents the rate of change, and allows us to create a graph.
