Storyboard Text

  • Metaphor
  • "The basement room was dark and warm, like the inside of a sealed jar" (Plath 1)
  • Simile
  • "With the lights clear and the air like honey." (Plath 3)
  • Symbol
  • "Outside, the sparrows were still chirping, and as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike." (Plath 9)
  • Metaphor: When Plath wrote that it felt like Millicent was in a sealed jar. She wrote that because Millicent was all alone in the basement sitting on a wood pile, and it was small and dark.
  • Quote
  • 2 years ago Millicent was shy and quiet. She said that it was like she was looking through a window at everyone else. And when she said the air was like honey , she was saying that the air was thick and it was hard to breathe until now.
  • Character
  • "What girl would not want to be one of the elect. No matter if it did mean five days of initiation before and after school, ending in the climax of Rat Court on Friday night when they made the new girls members?"(Plath 2)
  • Millicent
  • The sparrows represent all of the girls in the sorority, and the heather bird represents Millicent. Millicent at first wanted to be like the sparrows', but at the end she wanted to be like the heather birds.
  • Theme
  • This is the last quote in the story. When Millicent says this, she is saying that she is done trying to get into the sorority, and how she is on her own journey to find herself.
  • "Within Millicent another melody soared, strong and exuberant, a triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang so clear and lilting over the fa r lands. And she knew that her own private initiation had just begun." (Plath 9-10)
  • In the beginning, all Millicent wanted was to join the sorority, but in the end she found herself and did not want to join the sorority.
  • The theme is: Don't put yourself in situations where it won't benefit you in the long run.
  • "Tomorrow she would come to school, proudly, laughingly, without lipstick, with her brown hair straight and shoulder length, and then everybody would know, even the boys would know, that she was one of the elect." (Plath 3)
