Storyboard Text

  • Simile/Metaphor
  • "Like the inside of a sealed jar, Millicent thought, her eyes getting used to the strange dimness. The silence was soft with cobwebs, and from the small, rectangular window set high in the stone wall there sifted a faint bluish light" (Plath 1)
  • Flashback
  • "She could see now that what she was sitting on was a woodpile next to the furnace." (Plath 1)
  • Symbolism
  • "She visualized sparrows as she lay in bed Millicent visualized them, pale gray-brown birds in a flock, one like the other, all exactly alike. Millicent thought of the heather birds. Swooping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out across the great spaces of air, dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness. It was then that she made her decision. (Plath 9)
  • A simile is comparing things with the words like or as. In this story they are comparing the sealed jar and the basement. They chose this simile to put the reader in the story and help them feel what it would be like in that position.
  • Theme
  • “So many people are shut up tight inside themselves like boxes, yet they would open up, unfolding quite wonderfully, if only you were interested in them." (Plath 8)
  • The flashback in the story is Millicent sitting on the woodpile. She starts and ends the story sitting on the woodpile she shows that she had been telling it as a story that happened in the past and she was the one telling it. They told this story as a flashback so that it would set the mood and show how she felt.
  • Simile
  • Symbolism is using an object to represent something else. In this story it shows that the heather birds and they represent how she wishes she felt carefree, strong and proud. She then visualized sparrows all of them exactly alike. This is Millicent saying she wants to be a heather bird but she feels like a sparrow.
  • Character
  • "I want you to go up and down the bus asking people what they eat for breakfast. Remember, you can't tell them you're being initiated. " (Plath 7)
  • This theme is about an open box and a closed box. The open box is about everyone holding the real them in. The open box is everyone letting the real them out for everyone to see.
  • This is a simile because it is comparing clear lights and air like honey with the word like or as. In the book they were trying to make it be like you are a character in the story and help you visualize. They are similar because they are both clear-ish abut also can be sticky.
  • "With the lights clear and the air like honey."
  • This describes Millicent as a character by showing she works for what she wants and how shes outgoing. Millicent was told she would have to embarrass herself for part of initiation so she went ahead and did it. This shows she works for what she wants because she was willing to embarrass herself to get into a group this also shows she is outgoing because she was willing to talk to a bunch of strangers.
