Copernia explained to Scout that Jem was growing up and becoming more mature, which was changing how he acts.
Since Atticus was busy one Sunday, Copernia brought Scout and Jem to her church, First Purchase. At first, a woman named Lula made them feel unwelcome, but the others thankfully felt differently.
There were no copies of the hymns for everyone -- there was only one that Zeebo read off of. In return, everyone repeated back the words in song. Scout and Jem found this to be very different to what their church was like.
Scout and Jem also found that Reverend Sykes, the preacher's, sermon was different from what they usually heard. He addressed people specifically on the wrong they had done.
