Exposition: The Hungarian police in this scene are about to load up the Jews in cattle cars. It was too late for the Jews to escape. The Jews had been too optimistic when Hungarian and German people had started coming to Sighet. The Jews also ignored the things the Moishe the Beetle had warned them.
Conflict: In this scene, Elie and his father are experiencing life at a concentration camp. Jews are being killed in crematories, by SS officers, and gas chambers. Many of the Jews were losing their faith in God and trying to survive on their own. It had gotten so awful, to where the officers made the Jews watch three other Jews getting hung.
I want that coin!
Rising action: Germans are throwing things, such as bread and coins, into the cart where the Jews start to fight with each other for a few scraps of bread or coins. Elie had begged a woman to stop doing this, but everything just continued. The reason for the Jews fighting with each other was because they all were starving. The officers had not fed them for days.
