Come on! Mom says I have to take you to go pick up some materials for your project.
Ok. I was just rubbing my feet on our new carpet. It is so soft and fluffy! I wish I could sleep on it!
Ouch! The doorknob just shocked me! Why does this happen to me!
I know why. I will tell you, but first get in the car. We are running late.
When you rubbed your feet on the carpet, electrons from the carpet are moved onto you giving you a slight negative charge. Since our doorknob is metal, it is a good conductor which means that electrons can flow through it easily unlike insulators.
So tell me. Why did I get shocked?
Because of this, when you touch the doorknob, the electrons jump off of you and onto the doorknob unleashing a small shock which is what you felt.
