The plague, a heavily contagious and deadly bacterial disease was mainly caused by microscopic organisms called Yersinia pestis. These extremely small organisms lived in rats, rodents, and mice and in the fleas that feed on them.
Merchants on their trade routes were infected by the bacterial disease as they were bitten by fleas who contained the deadly bacteria.
