Storyboard Text

  • Northern States
  • The northern states wanted slaves to not be counted in the population, but the south did want them to be counted. This is because if they were counted for representation the south would have a lot more power opposed to the north who were against slavery.
  • The 3/5th Compromise
  • Southern States
  • The slaves should not be counted in the population because as a result of that the south will have more power when it comes to proportional representation.
  • That is the reason why we need them to be counted for representation. They live in our state so it's only fair they be counted in the population.
  • They eventually came to the compromise that three-fifths of the total slave population would be counted in the population for representaion. So neither side got exactly what they wanted.
  • Larger States
  • Larger states want to follow the Virginia plan and smaller states wanted to follow the New Jersey plan. The Virginia plan consisted of a bicameral legislature with proportional representation. The New Jersey plan wanted only one house and equal representation.
  • The Great Compromise
  • Smaller States
  • We have a higher population so we deserve to get more votes than you. Don't we want the people to be fairly represented?
  • Yes, we want them to be represented, but through the states. Everyone should have equal representation.
  • The Great Compromise -Bicameral Legislature -One house will have equal representation (senate) and one will have proportional (house of representitives)
