I arrived at the hut of Eumaeus, where I noticed a beggar eating breakfast. I knocked on the door.
The beggar changes appearance to pure white with a knit tunic. I had noticed and said that the beggar must be "one of the gods" (1024).
The beggar reveals himself as Odysseus, "I am the father whom your boyhood lacked and suffered pain for lack of. I am he" (1024). I could not hide my surprise.
Odysseus said, "I came to this wild place, directed by Athena, so that we might lay plans to kill our enemies" (1025). I said, "I have been waiting for that day for years, but I could not do it alone."
We planned to overthrow the suitors. Odysseus said, "Athena, counseling me, will give me word, and I shall signal to you, nodding: at that point round up all armor, lances, gear of war left in our hall, and stow the lot away back in the vaulted storeroom" (1027).
"If son of mine, you are and blood of mine, let no one hear Odysseus is about" (1027). He returned to his beggar appearance and we shared a brief embrace before I departed.
