Storyboard Text

  • Fossils are created when the remains of an organism are replaced by sediment which hardens into rock
  • Fossils can only be made in sedimentary rock and can be made from nests, print, trail, and burrows.
  • For example, if you find a rock that had 50% stable element and 50% unstable, then it was made one half life ago
  • Igneous rock can be dated to be found out when they were formed.
  • Half life is the amount of time it takes half of the unstable element to decay. So if there is 25% unstable element and the half life is 1 year, it was made 2 years ago.
  • We can do this by  viewing the amount of an   unstable  element is contained in the rock.
  • An extrusion, is when igneous rock flows onto the top layer and hardens making a new layer of igneous rock, instead of sedimentary rock.
  • Unfortunately, we can't do this with sedimentary of metamorphic, because they are made of tiny particles, if we tried to date it we would be dating the individual particles.
  • An intrusion is molten rock that splits through rock layers forming a new igneous layer.
  • We can date sedimentary rock using relative dating. This can tell  us which layers of sedimentary rock are older of younger. The layers on the bottom are the oldest. We can assume this because if you imagine yourself pouring water into a tube. The water you first pour in is on the bottom so the bottom layer of rock is the oldest.
  • We can assume that the layers on the bottom are the oldest by imagining yourself pouring sand into a tube. The sand you first pour in is on the bottom so the bottom layer of rock is the oldest. This is called the Law of Superposition.
