- On January 29, 1989, Lourdes set out. She left Belky and Enrique to go to the US to work and send money home. She is sad to leave Enrique, he was really shy and only loved her. Belky is sent to live with her grandma and Enrique with his father and grandmother Maria. She planned to stay in the US for a year or less.
- Belky and Enrique really missed their mother. Belky had to remind herself to be grateful, if her mother hadn't left, then she wouldn't be in school and her mother sent them money and gifts. Two years have passed since she left.
- Lourdes lived with her boyfriend so that they could split the rent. However, she accidentally got pregnant and after giving birth to a girl, Diana, he started drinking a lot and they separated. Lourdes was struggling with money a lot, having a baby didn't help. Back home, their kids were furious, the money should be to help them, their new sister would cost them. Lourdes was so desperate she worked as a "fichera".
- Lourdes decides to restart her American life. She sells everything and moves to North Carolina. She finds a room to rent in a trailer home that was half the rent price than her last home. She meets a man, also from Honduras, and they fall in love quickly.
- Back home, Enrique's behavior is horrible. He starts hitting others and lifting girl's skirts. Three times he was suspended and twice he repeated a grade. His grandmother tells him to come home early but he plays soccer until midnight. He wants to get Maria Isabel, her girlfriend, pregnant and he starts hanging out in a neighborhood known as Little Hell, which is controlled by gangs. He buys marijuana, sniffs glue, and is on other drugs, which put him into debt with a lot of gangs. He tired to quit but couldn't.
- On March 2, 2000, he finally leaves his home and sets out into a dangerous journey into the US. He is 16 years old and promises himself that only after a year of trying he would give up.
