  • "The 11:59" By: Patricia McKissack
  • Justin Smith Plot Analysis
  • Lester, a retired Pullman, would shine shoes at St Louis Station. Once he had finished, he would tell stories to the only family he had ever known, the Porters. He would tell them about the 11:59, and that if you hear a train whistle close to or at 11:59, your next!
  • Nobody EVER escapes the 11:59!
  • "Nobody EVER escapes the 11:59!"
  • As Lester was walking home, he receives a sharp pain in his chest. At the same exact time, he hears a train. "A train at this time?" He checks his watch, and it is 11:59! he runs home and sits in a corner, prepared for ANYTHING!
  • As Lester is sitting in his corner, he falls asleep. When he wakes up, it is almost 11:59! Lester is interrupted by a ghostly figure. It is his old friend that also got taken by the 11:59, Tip Sampson. Tip reminds Lester, that you can never escape the 11:59.
  • TICK-TOCK TICK TOCK
  • Tip tells Lester that it is his turn to board the Death train. Lester agrees, willingly stands up, and watches as the 11:59 smashes through his home and takes Lester's spirit with it.
  • When Lester hadn't shown up at St. Louis station the following morning, some friends came by, and found him dead, on the floor. It was a terrible sight! His eyes had been focused permanently on his golden watch, stuck on 11:59
  • I know its sad kids, but how is his watch exactly on 11:59?
