  • Compromise of 1850
  • In 1854 Congress gave the settlers of the Kansas and Nebraska territories the ability to choose to permit slavery or not - called the Kansas and Nebraska act
  • This announcement caused "Bleeding Kansas" when 5,000 pro-slavery men rushed into Kansas and began to fight with the people living there. 200 people were killed in 3 months

  • Dred Scott V Sandford case
  • Dred Scott was a slave who had lived in a free state for many years. He was going to be taken back to slavery so he sued the Supreme court and lost. He was told there were "no rights for black men." 
  • John Browns raid at Harper's ferry
  • John Brown and his men seized Harper Ferry and took captives. They killed some men and some of their were killed in return
  • John Brown cont.
  • Federal troops arrived the next morning and ended it quickly. John Brown was taken to the senate house in Virginia and hanged for his actions. 
  • Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 winning only 40% of the vote. He was a part of the republican party and wanted to halt slavery.
