  • When rumors of witchcraft rose up, Abigail, her cousin Betty, and a group of girls accuse people they hate of witchcraft. Proctor and Abigail had an affair, and drank blood to kill Goody Proctor.
  • In an attempt to stop the hangings of innocent people, Proctor brings in one of the accusing girls, Mary to confess that the girls were lying. Proctor admits he had an affair with Abigail, but his wife denies that the affair happened to protect Proctor. The girls accuse Mary of being a witch. Out of fear, she accuses Proctor.
  • On the day of Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, and Martha Corey's hangings, Elizabeth is sent to convince Proctor to confess. He agrees, but has to sign his name on a written confession. After signing, he thinks it will mean he sold his friends out, lying about them as well as himself. And so he refuses to confess and goes to his hanging a free man, finally having found “his goodness” again. Rebecca,Proctor, and Martha recite their commandments as they are about to be hanged.
