15-20 million years ago, the Twelve Apostles were one big piece of limestone rock.
The Twelve Apostles 6000 years ago when the formation started. Big pieces of sandstone rock fell of the main cliff.
About 6000 years ago, the Twelve Apostles begin to look like what we have now, next to the sea with similar sea levels.

Erosion cuts the Twelve Apostles off from the mainland and wears them down. They are decreasing about 2 cm in height each year.
During 2002-2009 five of the Twelve Apostles have crumbled.
Only 7 of the Twelve Apostles remain now on the coastal shores of Victoria in 2014.
I predict that in 100 years time a few more apostles would have crumbled or have become much shorter.
