On November 28, 1959, they started with "Test Sit-Ins". Their plan was to enter the restaurant and ask to be severed. If or when they refused to serve them they would just walk away. Without using any violence at all.
They would get arrested for sitting on the counters but it was worth it to them. They didn't care if they had to spend a day in jail. So many of them would get arrested that Police wanted to get rid of them so they reduced the bail to 5 dollars. They would rather spend the day in jail than be part of their system.
On May 10, 1960, 6 stores in Downtown Nashville served food to back customers for the first time in the first time in the city's History.
