Storyboard Text

  • I'm reading about the Mesoamerican ballgame, pok-ta-pok. It's actually really interesting! I'll tell and show you all about it!
  • Hey, what are you reading about?
  • At the Yucatán Peninsula
  • Cool! Where are we and why?
  • We are in the Yucatán Peninsula, at a site that has ancient Maya ruins. The Mayas played pok-ta-pok often.
  • So, did the Mesoamericans play this game for fun?
  • At the ruins of an ancient Maya stone court
  • That's horrible! I'm glad I didn't have to play that game back then!
  • Rarely. Most of the time, it was played instead of war. The losing team was sacrificed to the gods, to please them.
  • Wait, you never told me how the game is played!
  • Wow! That's similar to the sports we still play today!
  • Right! Two teams pass a heavy rubber ball across the court without using their hands. Sometimes, they might have shot the ball through a stone ring to gain points.
  • Wouldn't it hurt the players' bodies because they had to hit the heavy rubber ball?
  • Anyways, we should go back home now.
  • No, they wore protective uniforms while playing.
  • That was fun! We should learn about things like that more often!
  • Yeah! Thanks for telling me about pok-ta-pok! It's actually very interesting!
