Hello! My name is John F. Kennedy, and I was president during the Cuban Missile Crisis, which was a scary time for the world. It was the closet that the U.S and Russia came to nuclear war.
It all started when Fidel Castro overthrew the government of Cuba. At first, people were happy, but then when it was revealed that Castro was communist, most people weren't as happy anymore. For Americans, the idea of having a country with ties to Soviet Russia 90 miles off our coast was a scary thing. Then, when I became president, the CIA launched the Bay of Pigs Invasion, which was supposed to overthrow Castro. It failed, and I took responsibility for the capture of the rebels, which helped increase my popularity in America.
However, the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev, decided to something bold. He sent nuclear missiles to Cuba and positioned them at American cities and military bases, which really scared people in America. I responded by blockading all ships to Cuba and making sure that missiles were ready to be launched if Russia attacked. I also told Russia to take away the missiles. Secretly, I removed missiles in Turkey so that Russia might relent. For 13 days, the world held its breath. Then, the ships turned around and went home, and people finally sighed relief. The Cuban Missile Crisis is now remembered today as one of my biggest accomplishments as president.
