In 1526 Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon was sent by the Spanish to explore the new world, like Hernando de Soto. In their travels they came accross land off of the Waccamaw River.
Look at all this wonderful land to settle, Hernando will be so proud!
The Spanish then did decide to settle on this land. they had enslaved the Natives to help build this settlement. They called it San Miguel de Gualdape. This was the first European settlement in North America
Wonderful job men, this is turning out great!
About 6 months later the settlement was slowly diminishing. The people were on the verge of starvation and many were dying. They also lost a great amount of there slaves due to disease and sook help from Spain.
Dear the Spanish government, We need your help. We are on the verge of starvation and our workers are dying from disease. Please come. From Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon
