  • "Awright," she said contemptuously. "Awright, cover 'im up if ya wanta. Whatta I care? You bindle bums think you're so damn good. Whatta ya think I am, a kid? Ever'body! An' what am I doin'? Standin' here talkin' to a bunch of bindle stiffs—a nigger an' a dum-dum and a lousy ol' sheep—an' likin' it because they ain't nobody else." Curley's wife does not feel she is wanted on the farm and keeps Lennie's secret to feel wanted.
  • "If you don' want me I can go off in the hills an' find a cave. I can go away any time." "No—look! I was jus' foolin', Lennie. 'Cause I want you to stay with me." Lennie does not feel like George want him and he would be better off without caring for Lennie
  • "I was born right here in Southern California. My old man had a chicken ranch, ‘bout ten acres. The white kids come to play at our place, an’ sometimes I went to play with them, and some of them was pretty nice. My ‘ol man didn’t like that. I never knew till long later why he didn’t like that. But I know now." He hesitated, and when he spoke again his voice was softer. "There wasn’t another colored family for miles around. And now there ain’t a colored man on this ranch an’ there’s jus’ one family in Soledad." Crooks is talking about how he grew up on a big farm and is now segregated on the large farm.
