Storyboard Text

  • France's bad economy: France's economy was so bad because the only ones paying taxes were the peasants which had to support the rest of the community while everyone else spent it and because king Louis' XVI wife Marie had a bad spending habit even when the taxes were raised on on many things like bread and people were fight for it.
  • The estates general meeting: On May 5th, 1789 the Estates General were opened by the King. The Third Estate was represented by Maximilien de Robespierre. A lawyer from the North of France.   • The Third Estate, which had the most representatives, declared itself the National Assembly and took an oath to force a new constitution on the king. Initially seeming to yield, Louis legalized the National Assembly under the Third Estate but then surrounded Versailles with troops and dismissed Jacques Necker, a popular minister of state who had supported reforms. In response, the people mobilized and on July 14 stormed the Bastille–a state prison where they believed ammunition was stored–and the French Revolution began
