Storyboard Text

  • The Spanish arrives at the New World, seeking trade.
  • None of these people have spices to trade! What are we supposed to do?
  • Disappointed, it forced the explorers to make money for Spain another way.
  • Look behind me. There are mountains, that means that the land must be rich with valuable metals.
  • Because the natives didn't trade, they mined for silver instead.
  • Yes, I suppose so. Since the natives don't dabble in trade, we should probably just set up mining operations.
  • Short of labor, the colonists forced the natives to mine for them.
  • The Spanish Crown, through the encomineda system, compels you to work under our rule. As a result, you shall mine silver for us!
  • Back in Spain, the King is informed of the profit from the silver mining operations.
  • The Silver mining operations have been fruitful, your highness!
  • What a wonderful news! This will give the empire tremendous amounts of wealth. A fifth of the silver from those mines shall remain in our treasury, the rest can be circulated throughout the world.
  • This caused silver to be the source of Spanish New World wealth.
  • We are steadfastly approaching Manila. The silver we carry in this ship will enable us to buy goods and commodities from East and Southeast Asia.
