Immigrants left their homes to escape poverty, to have more life opportunities, and also to find safety from wars or enemies.
Reasons immigrants came to America was that they had heard free government land was available, America had a better economy than where they came from, and there were more job opportunities.
Travel / Arrival experience
Immigrants got to America by traveling on boats. They were in tight spaces on the deck and were at risk of diseases. Upon arrival, people had to wait in long lines wearing their best clothes to have a better opportunity to enter the country.
After arrival, most immigrants moved into tenement housing. There were little spaces for families, and had low standards for safety, sanitation, and comfort.
When trying to find a job it was hard because they were descriminted because of their race.
Although some got jobs their pay was very little.
