King Darius of Persia wanted to conquer Greece, so he sent his army to first conquer Athens. He landed at the Plain of Marathon, and planned to march from there to Athens.
Our army is here. Those Athenians won't stand a chance, your Highness.
Yes. We will conquer Athens, and from there, win Greece. You will lead the army to victory, Datis, and that tyrant Hippias will have his kingdom back, but it will be under my rule.
But the Athenians knew about this, and sent their own army, led by Miltiades, to the Plains of Marathon to stop the Persians and save their city.
