  • One of the main themes of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is fear and suspicion are destructive forces.  One example of this is when Charlie thought that the monster was coming towards them, so he shot it down dead, but it turned out to be Pete Van Horn. This is a good example of the theme because Charlie was afraid and suspicious of the monster. He was so scared of the monster that he shot what he thought was the monster, without even thinking it through. Another example of the theme is that after Charlie shot Pete everyone started to accuse him of being the monster and throw rocks at him. This is a good example of the theme because, everyone was so scared of a monster that they accused Charlie of being it and started throwing rocks at him with out thinking. A third example of the theme is that Charlie said that the monster was Tommy and then everyone turned on Tommy. They started shouting how did he know and started running after him. This is  a good example of the theme because everyone is so afraid of a monster and suspicious of who it is, that when Charlie accuses Tommy of being the monster everyone  turns on Tommy. These examples support my theme of Monsters Are Due on Maple Street
