• Georgina was playing basketball with her friend Millie and Ms. Lopez, her math teacher. After 4 rounds they took a break, as Georgina drank her water, her fried Milie asked her.
• ¨What could be the Area for the label of the bottle?¨
• ﻿“Well you see, the area of the label is the same as Lateral Surface Area.”
• ﻿“What is the Lateral Surface Area?”
• “The Lateral Surface area is the area of the surface that does not include the top or bottom of the bottle.” ﻿
• “The surface area has different formulas for cylinders and prisms. The bottle has the shape of a cylinder so, we would use the formula﻿ S=2πrh
• S=2πrh
• “Ms. Lopez what does S=2πrh mean?”
• ﻿“Good question Millie, the S is for your answer, the 2π means to multiply 2 with pi. The r means radius and the h means height,”
• ﻿“If the bottle had a diameter of 20 and a height of 6, the radius must be 10...”
• “but how you get the 10, Ms. Lopez?”
• “The diameter is doubled from the radius. In this case the diameter is 20,  the diameter is 2 times bigger than the radius so, to get the radius we need to divide by 2, and that give us 10.”
