  • 1. The real monsters were the people living on Maple street. One reason is that when Les Goodman's car turned on when the power went off, and most of the people started to gang up on him for no valid reason. Another reason is that when Steve was defending Les, Charlie started to accuse Steve that he was the one who caused this. Then when Peter Van Horn was walking towards them they thought he was a monster so Charlie shot him. This caused everyone to think Charlie had killed Peter on purpose because he knew something.
  • The aliens used some sort of strange power to turn the power off and on.
  • A young boy named Tommy told the people on Maple street a story about aliens arriving from outer space. The people believed his story and they started to suspect each other of being secret aliens.
  • Strange Powers

  • The protagonist of the story is Steve because he offered to go downtown to see what was going on and he tried to calm down the hostile people.
  • When Steve is about to go downtown to see what had caused the power outage Tommy tried to stop him because he says, they (aliens) won't want anyone to leave.
  • Problem
  • Protagonist
  • We find out the aliens had set up this type of situation for the people on Maple street to see how they would react.
  • The antagonist of the story were the people living on Maple street because they all turned on each other.

  • 2. I infer that Rod Serling made this episode because he wanted to tell us that fear and suspicion can cause peaceful people to turn on one another. I think this because if the people on Maple Street didn't get so suspicious and fearful no on would have turned on each other. I also think he made this because he wanted to tell us prejudices can kill, suspicions can destroy, and the thoughtless, frightened, search for a scapegoat has a fallout all on its own. I think he wanted to tell us this because when everyone on Maple street starts to have prejudices, suspicions, and scapegoats for others, things get out of hand. If they had never thought those things about each other nothing would have fell apart. 3.
