Uncle Hammer was going to go home soon, so he decided to take the family on a ride before he leaves. As they were coming home, they had to cross Soldier's Bridge, and usually the African-Americans would have to let a white cross the bridge first. But on this occasion, when Uncle Hammer was driving in his silver Packard, which was practically identical to the one Mr. Granger owned, he did not wait for a truck with white children in it to pass first. Instead, he stepped on the gas and drove right past the truck. The truck driver offered on resistance to the Logans, for they thought it was Mr. Granger who was in the silver Packard.
Mr. Granger goes to the Logans' house to see Papa, Mama, Uncle Hammer, and Big Ma. He threatened to take away their land if they don't stop the shopping in Vicksburg, which was making him loose business at the Wallace store. He says that when they can't pay their mortgage and the government forecloses their land, he will take away their land.
