Ken and Bob two filmmakers from NYC , were sent to Welch to document the lifestyle there. While the filmmakers were presenting a swedish movie at school, Jeannette and lori got to speak to Ken and Bob. lori showed Ken and Bob her art work. The filmmakers told Lori that if she wants to take her art career seriously she had to go New York City. After that talk with Ken and Bob , Lori and Jeannette started saving money for NYC. Brian pitched in, the three of them did odd jobs. The plan was that Lori would go to New York right after she graduates high school.Find a place to live and find a job as an artist , then she would bring Jeantette to live with her. Rosemary wasn’t working instead they went to craft fairs on the weekends and Rosemary would try to sell her art there. Rex would disappear for periods of time but when he came back he would bring food and some money. Weeks before Lori graduates Jeanette went to look at the money they saved up , but when she went to look at it the money was gone. Everyone blamed Rex, but Rex kept saying it wasn't him. Mrs.Senders a teacher who Jeanette was babysitting for, offer Jeanette $200 and a bus ticket back to Welch if she babysat her kids in Iowa. Jeanette told Mrs.Senders to take Lori instead and buy her a ticket to New York. Lori left that summer.
