  • Oh no, my pipe!
  • (Shots fired in the distance)
  • So that's where the shots are coming from!
  • (Follows footprints to mansion)
  • Shots and footprints mean people, if I follow these footprints I will find help!
  • The action of the story kicks off when Rainsford loses his pipe and tries to go after it. While doing so, he loses balance and falls into the ocean.
  • Bulls are the most dangerous game.
  • Wrong,
  • Hunting normal animals is too boring for me, so I've resided to hunting people instead.
  • While keeping afloat, Rainsford hears more gun shots and soon finds himself washed upon an island, the same one from earlier that day.
  • I must out-think that murderer! I shall meet him in his home and kill him!
  • After sleeping until after noon, Rainsford finds footprints and traces them to a mansion in the middle of the jungle where he knocks on the door and meets a deaf man with a gun pointed at his head, but is soon let indoors by General Zaroff.
  • I am still a beast at bay, Zaroff.
  • Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard Rainsford...
  • During dinner, Zaroff and Rainsford discuss their love for hunting. Rainsford claims that hunting bull is most dangerous. Zaroff cuts Rainsford off and explains how his statement his false. He explains that hunting humans is the most dangerous game.
  • Zaroff tells Rainford he will be the next quarry and the next morning, the hunt begins. Rainsford runs far away as possible towards the sea, then hides. Zaroff sets traps for Rainsford only to find he accidentally kills Ivan with one of them. Zaroff returns to his estate thinking that Rainsford had jumped off the cliff of the island to escape.
  • Little does Zaroff know, Rainsford circled back to his estate and was hiding in his bedroom. Rainsford reveals himself when Zaroff enters the room and makes it clear that one must die at the end of this 'hunt.' It is assumed that Rainsford won the brawl in the end as he had "never slept so soundly in a bed that night."
