  • Mesoamerica is a region located in parts of North and South America. It includes what is now modern-day Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

  • There, they played a ballgame called pok-a-tok. The ball is made of natural rubber and can weigh more than 4 kilos, which is equal to about 9 pounds. There are barely any balls left though, since natural rubber is extremely sensitive.

  • In this game, the ball is not allowed to touch your hands or feet. Players scored points by passing the ball through rings.
  • The sport of the Mesoamerican ballgame really is a life-and-death experience because the losing team was killed as a human sacrifice to gods.
  • Pok-a-tok is similar to many sports today. It is similar to basketball because of the rings and similar to soccer because you move the ball around. The only major difference is that we are allowed to use our hands and feet.
