How Athens Came to Be
Once there was a coastal town that both Athena and Poseidon wished to rule
Since there couldn't be two gods ruling one town, Poseidon challenged Athena for it. Whoever gave the townspeople the best gift would be the god of that town.
I challenge you!
Poseidon had broken a mountain and gave the town a source of water. The townspeople cheered for Poseidon, because they finally had fresh water to drink. Unfortunately, the water was sea water, not fresh water.
Athena however, gave the town an olive tree, that provided them with wood to build homes and heat fires, and olives, that would feed the town.
In the end, Athena won over the town, and thus named the town Athens, after Athena.
