In 1965, the communist leader Nicolae Ceausesu and his wife set up a dictatorial regime in Romania. He used secret police to cease all dispute but still opposition to his regime grew.
Ceausescu's economic policies led to many problems such as food shortages. His plan for rapid urbanization also further angered the Romanians.
Finally, one event sparked a revolution. In December 1989, the secret police murdered thousands of men, women, and children who were peacefully demonstrating. The army refused to support any more repression and Caeusesu and his wife were captured and executed.
