Storyboard Description

Thorin's grandfather, Thror, brought the dwarves and their mining tools to the Lonely Mountain. All day and all night, they worked hard mining, until they discovered a whole cave of sparkling jewels and gold. They became wealthy and Thror was crowned the King of the Mountain, ruling over the people of the town of Dale in the valley. Before long, the luxurious amount of treasure brought unwanted attention. Smaug, a dragon, came to Dale and breathed fire on the people and houses. Many were killed or injured, but through a secret way, Thror and Thrain escaped. Yet, they only had the chance to hand Gandalf the Map and Key to give to Thror. Ever since, the dragon has been protecting the gold. Now, with other dwarves, Gandalf, and possibly Bilbo Baggins' help, Thorin will be able to win his family's gold and jewels back from Smaug.

Storyboard Text

  • Everyone! This way! To that mountain up there! Come along.
  • Long ago, Thorin's grandfather brought the dwarves tools and wealth to a mountain where they mined for jewels and gold to create items for themselves and others.
  • During this time, gold, which dragons were known to steal, was becoming scarce. The dragons migrated south, in search of valuable items.
  • In the mountains, the dwarves mined, until Thror found a great wealth of jewels and gold. Becoming a very rich man, Thror was crowned King of the Mountain.
  • However, this brought unwanted attention from the dragon Smaug. The dragon breathed fire on the town of Dale, burning the houses, as well as the people trapped in them.
  • Thror and Thrain barely escaped through a secret route, getting the chance to give the Map and the Key to Gandalf. Ever since, Smaug has been protecting the gold.
  • To get back his family's gold back, Thorin, with the twelve other dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo Baggins, plans to go on a quest with the Map and Key in hand.
