Soviet troops crushed the reform movement in Czechoslovakia in 1968, Communist decided to use a massive repression to maintain their power. In 1988 mass demonstrations took place, with crowds as large as 500,000 forming in Prague. In December the Communist gov. collapsed.
At the end of December, Vaclac Havel, a writer who helped bring down the communist government, became the new president.
The new government soon faced problems. The two national groups, the Czechs and Slovaks, agreed to a peaceful division. Havel was the first president of the Czechs, and Kovac was the first president of Slovaks
