  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act was important because it increased tensions between the north and south and caused violence between supporters of slavery and abolitionists
  • We've come here from the south to ensure that slavery spreads to Kansas.
  • Bleeding Kansas: After pro-slavery Missouri residents rig the vote and legalize slavery in Kansas, anti-slavery government is established and the two fight for control of Kansas, violence ensues. 
  • Dred Scott: A former slave who had been living in the north is forced back into slavery and sues for his freedom, the Supreme Court rules that black people legally have no rights.

  • John Brown was a radical anti-slavery leader who decided to lead a slave revolt into the south after getting guns from the armory at Harper's Ferry.

  • South Carolina becomes the first state to secede from the Union and join the Confederacy.
