Percy and his friends go down to the Underworld because Percy thinks that Hades has stolen the lighting bolt. It turns out that Hades was not the one who stole it. Because of Percy's accusations, Hades blames his missing helmet on percy. Hades checks what he believes to be Percy's backpack and finds the lighting bolt. The reader later discovers that the backpack did not belong to Percy.
On Percy's adventure, he finds Ares on the beach who had stolen the helmet from Hades and the lighting bolt from Zeus. Percy battles and injures Ares which allows him to successfully obtain the helmet and the lighting bolt. Percy then returns the stolen items back to their owners.
Percy deceides to go home with his mom for the summer instead of staying at camp Half Blood. When Percy is leaving, Luke admits that he stole the lighting bolt and the helmet because he was trying to start a war between the gods.
