  • Congress finally allowed a law that allowed me the federal government to pay Native Americans to move west.
  • I finally pushed the Indian Removal Act through Congress.
  • We don't want to move west.
  • The government will pay you to move west.
  • You don't have a choice.
  • Most eastern Native American people felt forced to sell their land and move west.
  • LETS GO!!!
  • In treaties of the 1790s, the federal government had recognized the Cherokee as a separate nation. The Cherokee refused to sell their land and move west.
  • We are not going to move!
  • Treaties-a formally concluded and ratified agreement between countries.
  • WEST>>
  • Between June and December 1838, soldiers rounded up the Cherokee in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee.
  • The Cherokee began their march to Indian Territory in the West.
  • The forced relocation or moving of some 15,000 Cherokee was a terrible ordeal. Most people were not prepared for the journey. Illness broke out and 2,000 Cherokee died.
  • When relocation was over, about one quarter of the Cherokee population was dead. The Cherokee came to call their forced journey west the Trail Where They Cried.
