Here we meet Mr. Barth and his son, Calvin Barth. They are walking back from the morning church service. "Father, why must I marry her?" asked Calvin. "Whatever do you mean, Calvin?" Mr Berth inquired. "Are you speaking of Beatrice? Your marriage was bound by birth!" The two walked together in silence until they were interrupted by a familiar friend
YOU WILL DO AS YOU ARE TOLD, CALVIN! YOU WILL NOT DISRESPECT ME LIKE THIS!
I DON'T LOVE HER! SHE'S NOT MEANT FOR ME!
Mr Berth: Ah! Madam Madalyn! It's been far too long! How have you been? Mr. Berth is excited to see his old friend. Madam Madalyn: Beg your pardon Mr. Berth, we only just saw you yesterday... Are you okay, sir? Mr Berth: Oh I am quite marvelous, Malady! M.M.: That's glorious! Tell me, how much longer til our children marry? Sir Calvin IS already 18 afterall.
Calvin, interrupting his father: With all due respect, Madam, I do not wish to marry your daughter. M. M. :Beg your pardon? Calvin: I am not fit to marry such a beautiful woman like she. Furthermore, malady, I- Mr Berth: No that is enough out of you, Calvin! Your marriage is already arranged and that is FINAL! Now, I apologize for my son's outburst, Madam. Fear not, the marriage is still on!
That night, at Berth Manor, an argument is taking place between father and son. Afterwards, Calvin leaves to his room.
"Why does he even care?! My life is not his! Why can he not leave me alone?!" Calvin spoke to himself after the dispute. He pondered on a way of how to escape hi inevitable marriage with someone he did not truly love.
"I know what I'll do!" Calvin said as he rose from his bed side. "I know of a place across the great oceans to the east. A new land- neigh, a Promise land! I shall run away to this promise land. This land of promised freedom! I can marry whoever I please! I will leave tonight!
