  • You can't beat Mr. Granger

  • In this scene, Lilian Jean had bumped into Cassie. Lillian then told Cassie to apologize. Cassie got angered and started to talk back. Then Lilian's father, Mr. Simms had pushed Cassie down and tells her to listen to his daughter. This creates conflict.
  • Chapter 8

  • In this scene, Mama tells Cassie the reasons why Big Ma didn't do anything when Mr. Simms had pushed Cassie down. Mama tells Cassie the reason why white people think their better than black people. She also tells Cassie this by using the subject slavery.
  • In this scene, Mr. Jamison goes to the Logan land in order to discuss whether or not they will sell or keep the land the have. Mr. Jamison talks about the trouble Harlan Granger is going to get them in. Mr. Logan says that he will try really hard  to beat Mr. Granger so he could show his children he tried.

  • In this scene, Cassie Logan gets her revenge on Lilian Jeans. Cassie had told Lillian that she had a surprise down the woods. When Cassie brought her down there. Cassie threw Lillian's books on the ground and said that she was done helping her. Lillian starts a quick fight, and so Cassie defends her self making sure not to punch Lillian in areas in which no one could see. Cassie explains that Lillian can't tell anyone about this since she knows all of her secrets.
  • This scene shows what happened to Papa when he was in Vicksburg. Mr. Logan had set a trip to Vicksburg, when they went there, they encountered people who had shot and ran over his leg. Now Papa won't be able to make money to keep their land. This will cause them to borrow money.
  • In this scene, The children see Uncle Hammer from a revival and run to him. Uncle Hammer had sold his car, so he could be able to pay for the land him and Papa own. The children looked confused because they were unsure why he sold it. He knew that he had to sell his car, since a car to him was just an accessory,
