  • Exposition: Characters- Rainsford and General Zaroff Setting- Ship trap island Mood- Eerie
  • Conflict
  • Rainsford says, "No general, I will not hunt" (Connell 73)
  • 1) Rainford says, "I'll give him a trail to follow" then the author says, "he struck off from the rude path he had been following into the trackless wilderness" (Connell 75) 2) The author says, "...the dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest on the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder... the general nursing his shoulder had left" (Connell 77) 3) The author says " The baying of the hounds stopped abruptly, and Rainsford's heart stopped, too. They must have reached the knife... then Rainsford saw Zaroff was still on his feet, but Ivan was not" (Connell 79)
  • Rising Action
  • Climax
  • The author says, " He reached it. It was the shore of the sea... 20 feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea" (Connell 80)

  • The author tells us, "General Zaroff had an exceedingly good dinner... although 2 slight annoyances kept him from perfect enjoyment... the other was that his quarry had escaped him" (Connell 80) this shows us that Rainsford wasn't found and that Zaroff has lost his hunt for the 1st time ever.
  • Resolution
  • Zaroff says " One of us has to furnish a repast " (Connell 80). When he says this he means that he has to keep his word about letting Rainsford free.
