  • The Mayflower Compact
  • Signed in 1215, the Magna Carta protected the individual rights of people. The Magna Carta, or the Great Charter, served as a foundation for the rights we have today.
  • Virginia House of Burgesses
  • In 1689, England's Parliament protected individual rights in the English Bill of Rights. This served as an example for the colonial bills and the Bill of Rights in the U.S Constitution.
  • Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
  • In 1620 the Pilgrims and Puritans created a democratic system of government aboard the Mayflower which protected their individual rights. This became known as the Mayflower Compact.
  • Mayflower Compact
  • The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first colonial assembly which also made it the first representative government in the colonies. The elected persons met to help make laws and governmental polices for their colony.
  • In 1639 the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was the first written colonial constitution that protected the individual rights or the colonists and was religious tolerant. This served as an example  for future constitutions.
