  • Figurative Language
  • The North Star, is symbolism, because the star symbolizes the slave being, or finding, freedom. The star is guiding him to Canada, freedom.
  • Tone
  • In the first stanza, of 'On The Underground Railroad', there is wonderful imagery, "His clothes are tattered, His feet are bare; They bleed from frostbite.
  • Theme
  • In the second stanza it says, "This railroad to freedom,", this is a metaphore for for his path to freedom,freedom being Canada, and railroad being his path to Canada.
  • The tone of this poem is dark, gloomy, and morbid, but at the end of the poem it turned hopeful.
