Storyboard Text

  • Yeah, he was a biologist at WHOI in Massacussetts and wanted to find the GFP  gene in a jellyfish.
  • Do you know who is Douglas Prasher?
  • Exactly,to find the gene he studied the amino acid sequence of part of the GFP protein.By comparing this sequence to a genetic code table, he was able to predict aprobable mRNA base.
  • Do you know if he made it?
  • Actually, yes, after many trials he found one that bound perfectly and then he set out to find the actual gene. He found a fragments bound tightly to the mRNA that contained exactly the gene for GFP. Do you know for what is GFP?
  • Yeah, to label proteins in living cells and I know the method he used is called Southern blotting.
  • In these days is easier to scientists to search for genes in computers, the scientists make copies of it by a technique called polymerase chain reaction
  • I know that the first step is to heat a piece of DNA which will be separated in two strands
  • Yes, then primers bind to the single strands and the DNA polymerase starts coying te region between the primers
