Hiram Rhodes Revels
I stand today on this floor to appeal for protection from the strong arm of the government for her loyal children, irrespective of color and race, who are citizens of the southern states, and particularly of the State of Georgia.
Hirman Rhodes Revels was born on September 27, 1827. He grew up as a free man. When he was a young man, he traveled around the country teaching people about religion and just overall educating them.
In 1870, Hirman Rhodes Revels is elected to the Senate as the first African-American senator in all of history. He fought for civil rights but sadly did not get far.
Without Hirman Rhodes Revels, African- Americans in politics would not have been so common. Becoming the first African- American senator opened up many new doors for other African- American politicians, including former President Barack Obama.
