  • While the Smith family did fight, like many others, they were not compensated at all for the loss of their family members. This was not uncommon during this time, as workers were often treated unfairly
  • Please provide us with some compensation for our daughter's death. She died working in your factory after all.
  • This isn't right!
  • Textile Mill
  • She died because of her own carelessness. I refuse to do anything for you
  • The new changes bought about by the industrial revolution, including the lack of worker's rights, lead to the development of many new political and economic theories,
  • Workers rights
  • Communism
  • Socialism
  • The Industrial Revolution began with the rise of capitalism. Capitalist leaders such as Adam Smith believed in free trade and economy without government interference and opposed mercantilism.
  • However this new idea of capitalism had many cons which lead to social division, reduced wages, and lack of specialized skills. This led to the development of new theories such as socialism and communism.
  • The main ideas of socialism included a planned economy with greater economic equality and ownership of income producing property under the hands of the state. Me such as Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill fought for utilitarianism and the greater good of the people.
  • The idea of communism began with Karl Marx who predicted the new social order would begin as a response to the abuse of bourgeois capitalism. The goal of communism would be a society led by a dictatorship of the proletariat that would preside over the transformation of the society. Within the society, private control ownership of the means of production would be abolished and everyone would be equal with the ability to develop their full potentials.
  • We are all equal!
