Storyboard Text

  • People are gathered here to discuss the issue of slaves and how to count them for a free person for taxation and representation.
  • Today, we are talking about how to make each slave count as a free person. Anyone got any ideas?
  • It's because they might use that power to run away or worse.
  • Thank you. Um, why not just let them be counted as a free person?
  • Anyone at all?Yes, the gentleman in the back.
  • Why should we care about what they think? And it's not like they have any money to pay for some taxes. I think we shouldn't give them any power at all.
  • Any other ideas?
  • Well, that's exactly what Britain would do, but we are not Britain. Also, we are kind, but we kinda don't trust them.
  • I have an idea: For every five slaves, we count them as three free persons. We should call it the Three-Fifths Compromise.
  • Great idea, George! The Three-Fifths Compromise, a great name for an even greater idea! Let's start writing the papers.
  • And so, the Three-Fifths Compromise was founded and each slave was counted as three-fifths of a free person
