The Green Knight comes to King Arthur's court with a challenge. He will allow one man to swing his sword at him, and in a year, he will swing his sword at that man.
Sir Gawain decides to take the challenge. He takes off the Green Knights head. But the Green Knight picks it up and rides away.
Sir Gawain sets out to find the Green Knight one year later and comes across a castle. The lord says that he can stay there, if he gives back to him what he gained throughout the day.
The lords wife tries to make advances on him. He denies her, but they exchange gifts. She gives him a sash that makes its wearer invulnerable to harm.
He meets the knight, and allows the Green Knight the swing at him. Sir Gawain doesn't die, but the Green Knight reveals that he was the lord of the castle.
The Green Knight forgives him for taking the sash, and they both go back to the castle to have a new years feast.
