Perfume takes place in Paris in 18th century France. The main character is Grenouille, a man with impeccable smell.
"Should he, Baldini, nevertheless decide one day to help him obtain his journeyman's papers, that would happen only on the basis of Grenouille's uncommon talents, his faultless behavior from then on, and his, Baldini's, own infinite kindness, which, though it often had worked to his own disadvantage, he would forever be incapable of denying." -- Ch. 21, pg 128
"He [Baldini] merely said a brief adieu. And Grenouille nodded and ducked away and was gone." -- Ch. 21, pg 131
"Two buildings were hurtled into the river, so completely and suddenly that none of their occupants could be rescued. Fortunately, it was a matter of only two persons, to wit: Giuseppe Baldini and his wife, Teresa." -- Ch. 22, pg 135
"Gone were the roiling of hundreds, thousands of changing odors at every pace; instead, the few odors there were--of the sandy road, meadows, the earth, plants, water--extended across the countryside in long currents, swelling slowly, abating slowly, with hardly an abrupt stop." -- Ch. 23, pg 139
"And so he finally gave up these excursions and was concerned only with getting back into his crypt as quickly as possible once he had taken care of the most basic chores necessary for simple survival. For here, inside the crypt, was where he truly lived." -- Ch. 25, pg 149
