Elizabeth Taylor listens to her parents discussing slave trade in D.C, where they live. Because of the Compromise of 1850, slave trade is no longer allowed. This is not good news for the Taylor family.
Elizabeth Taylor marries James Carter and moves to South Carolina.
After they are married, James and Elizabeth visit their Northern relatives. Elizabeth's uncle just got back from his mercantile in Pennsylvania.
James speaks with his wife, Elizabeth about the newest president of the U.S, Abraham Lincoln. "He isn't qualified," says James. "Jefferson Davis would have been better."
Not long afterward, The Confederate States of America is formed, with Jefferson Davis as president. This makes James happy because he lives in South Carolina.
South Carolina was the first state to leave the Union. They left because they had slaves and didn't want to lose them.
James and Elizabeth had a large plantation, which means they needed a lot of workers.
